The ruins of Hamar Cathedral bear witness of the town’s importance during the Medieval Age. The Cathedral was built during the second half of the 10th century. It fell out of use after the reformation in 1537 and burnt during the Seven-year war. Hamar Cathedral lay in ruins for the next 300 years and served as a stone quarry. Since the turn of the 1900s the ruins have been maintained regularly. The enclosing structure was raised to protect the ruins from rain and wind.
