In order to measure concentrations of heavy metals in moss, several nationwide surveys have been carried out since 1977. The last survey in 2005 showed little change in concentrations since 2000. Industrial plants on the Kola Peninsula are still the dominant source of copper deposition. More surveys conducted in recent years indicate that the deposition of certain metals, primarily nickel and copper, has increased.
