Brown bear

Around150 years ago, the Scandinavian bear population numbered 4000 - 5000 animals, two-thirds of them in Norway. Bounties led to them being ruthlessly hunted, and 200-300 bears were shot every year between 1850 and 1860. Analyses of DNA from beer faeces found in the Sør-Trøndelag county and in the northern counties of Norway in 2006 indicated 71 individuals of bears in this part of Norway.Bears breed every year in the Pasvik area in Finnmark, close to the Swedish border, but occasionally also in other parts of Norway. Annually, between 3 and 6 bears breed in Norway.

Are we moving in the right direction?

All four large carnivores, wolf (Canis lupus), lynx, (Lynx lynx), wolverine (Gulo gulo) and brown bear (Ursus arctos), were widely distributed and common in Norway in the mid-19th century. By the mid-20th century, their numbers had been greatly reduced and they were close to extinction. Since then, protection has improved the situation for all four species, but their numbers are still much lower than they were 100-150 years ago.
