Caesium-137 in soil in 1986, 1995 and 2005
Are we moving in the right direction?
More than 25 years have passed since the Chernobyl accident in 1986. The accident resulted in radioactive fallout over large parts of Norway. Most fallout ended up in the mountains of Southern Norway, in Nord-Trøndelag and in the southern parts of Nordland. The fallout consisted of a range of radioactive substances, among them caesium-137.
Cesium-137 has a physical half-life of 30 years. Consequently, there are still high levels of radioactive caesium in several areas in Norway.Cesium-137 has a physical half-life of 30 years. The levels have declined since the Chernobyl accident, but are now declining more slowly than previous years.
