A low level of risk of harm to health or the environment as a result of acute pollution will be maintained, and continuous efforts will be made to reduce the level of risk. This will also be a guiding principle for activities that represent a risk of acute pollution.

Are we moving in the right direction?

The total volume of oil spills decreased in 2006. The most significant reduction in volume of spilled oil was from land-based sources. The volume of offshore oil spills was also reduced. After a drop in the volume of acute oil spills in 2005 from the shipping the volume in 2006 was increasing again.

The total number of acute oil spills in 2006 was at the same level as the previous year.
