Are we moving in the right direction?

The national air quality targets apply to the entire country, but pollution problems are greatest in towns and cities. Measurements show that NO2 is a problem in many places.

In 2010, the national target was exceeded in January in Bergen and Oslo. During the first two weeks of January there were 70 exceedances in Bergen. This was due to a combination of exhaust gases, particularly from diesel vehicles, and periods of cold, stagnant air.

Projections of NO2 levels

New projections for NO2 show that concentrations will be higher in 2020 than previously thought. Both the national target and requirements under the Pollution Control Regulations will be exceeded. The reason is the increased proportion of diesel vehicles. In addition, the NO2 portion of NOx (NO + NO2) from heavy vehicles has increased considerably compared to previous calculations.
