Are we moving in the right direction?
Norway has reduced the anthropogenic discharges of phosphorus to the coastline from the border with Sweden to Lindesnes at the southernmost tip of Norway by around 60 per cent since 1985.
It has been easier to reduce discharges of phosphorus than nitrogen, largely because it is a simpler matter to remove phosphorus from synthetic fertiliser and municipal waste water. Discharges of phosphorus from industry have also been reduced, partly by treatment and partly through the closure of industrial plants.
