Rate of subsidence at Bryggen in Bergen
Are we moving in the right direction?
Standards of maintenance generally unsatisfactory
The Directorate for Cultural Heritage has investigated the standards of maintenance of privately owned protected buildings. Ordinary maintenance is sufficient for 38 per cent of the buildings. 62 per cent require moderate or major repairs in order to achieve ordinary levels of maintenance.
Serious problems at Bryggen in Bergen
It has recently been shown that Bryggen (the old wharf) in Bergen is subsiding at an alarmingly high rate. For one of the buildings, Bredsgården, the rate of subsidence is up to 8 mm a year. The monitoring programme has also shown that the problem extends much further into the area designated as a World Heritage site than was thought at first. Extensive work will be required to preserve the buildings.
