Are we moving in the right direction?
Monuments and sites protected by individual protection orders are still not an entirely representative selection, and there are wide geographical variations. Some of the bias can be explained by campaigns to protect particular categories of monuments or sites.
Many monumental buildings have been protected for a long time, whereas protection of entire cultural environments did not start until the 1990s. The fishing village of Sør-Gjæslingan in Nord-Trøndelag was the most recent cultural environment to receive protection, in 2010.
The protection of a number of cultural environments and the preparation of national protection plans for certain categories of structures has considerably improved the social and geographical balance and the range of historical periods represented.
Although not all the main categories are adequately represented in all counties, individual protection orders do now include all the categories that are of particular national value.
