Are we moving in the right direction?

A hundred years ago, the corncrake was a common species in Norway, but the population has been declining steadily since the early part of the 20th century. Today, Norway has only a small number of corncrakes.

There has been a similar decline in most of Western Europe, but populations in Eastern Europe are much healthier. Observations show that the number of calling males varies a good deal from year to year, and 2002 and 2003 were the best years in the period shown above.
